Finished It Friday
Whew! Another week gone and sooo quickly! The offline obligations are currently taking way more time than I anticipated, but I’m getting lots done, so that’s ok.
I’m anticipating at least another week of crazy-busy offline stuff before I am able to establish some sort of regular schedule. Don’t worry, the blog posts will continue throughout it all, although some may appear later in the day than usual. There will still be a post every weekday for you to enjoy.
But now, I’m going to head back offline and try to spend some time relaxing this weekend. Hope you have the opportunity to do the same. Have a great one and I’ll see you all next week.

What If Pets Used The Internet?
Today find me in a slighly humorous mood. I read an article about a new collar that enables cats to use twitter to talk to their owners throughout the day and it got me thinking… what if our pets really could use the Internet? What sites would they like? What would they tell us?
Here what came to mind…
Birds would use Twitter… obviously… the logo is a bird! Plus, birds have small brains and probably couldn’t think of more than 140 characters at any one time. They would spend all day retweeting everything they happened to see, “Polly want a cracker?”
Dogs would probably prefer a blog. They could use it to broadcast to the world many times daily just how hungry they are, perhaps install a widget to lick unsuspecting readers and complain incessantly anout that darn itch behind their right ear. Blog posts would end quite abruptly, usually with the word “squirrel”, “ball” or “mailman.”
Cats would insist on Facebook, due to it’s apparent ability to rule the globe… plus they could have their own virtual aquarium. They would build a huge network of cat friends whom they would chat with regularly, during the 4 hours they are awake daily, sharing ideas on how to best torment the dog and achieve household (if not world) dominance. They would also start random groups like “I like to trip my human at the top of the stairs and laugh at them when they fall!”
Snakes would prefer Twitter and wouldn’t post much because their tails would hurt if they had to type too often.
Fish most definately prefer the slower pace of LinkedIn. They don’t like having too many people in their space or being able to interact too much… LinkedIn is perfect for this.
Rabbits would have one of everything and be constantly updating. Their constant supply of energy would allow them to continue doing this for as long as the computer lasted… although the keyboard would have to be replaced frequently due to all the bouncing.
There you have my list. What do you think your pet would do if given the chance to get online?
Recharging Yourself
Surviving in the online world requires constant observation and maintenence of your Internet empire. Adding a new site or profile doesn’t just double your workload; it multiplies it exponentially until things can get very out of control. Suddenly you find yourself up at odd hours of the night maintaining, fixing things and networking. Before long, it can completely consume you and you are faced with what I call “virtual burnout.”
You suddenly find that maintaining everything isn’t as fun as it was in the beginning and you actually miss going outside… Remember that big shiny thing in the sky? I believe they still call it the sun.
It’s very important to get things running as smoothly as possible so that you can get off the computer and get back to living your real life. There are several things that can help you do that.
1. Schedule things head of time. Blog posts, Tweets and even Facebook status’ can be scheduled ahead of time.
2. Schedule your online time. Set time limits and use a timer if necessary to make yourself stick to them.
3. Make good use of your offline time. Use the tools you’ve learned online to research fun, new activities for your offline time.
4. Cross post. Have your blog updates auto post to Twitter, facebook and LinkedIn. This way you are updating several sites at one time.
5. Back up everything! There isn’t a bigger time drain around than having to recreate everything from scratch. Regular backups help you save time should your online data disappear unexpectedly.
BONUS: Create an email list. Better yet, create many… one for blog subscribers, Twitter followers, Facebook friends and fans, etc. Even if you don’t have anything to send them now, you will be able to find them all again should anything happen to your site and save time by redirecting them to your new site.
Getting offline without falling behind can be challenging, butimplementing these few simple ideas can help you get offline quicker and prevent virtual burnout. Now get offline for a while and go enjoy the real world a bit today… we miss you out here!!!
